Intermittent Electrical Power Losses

Good Morning Everyone,

Firstly I need to apologise if I'm creating a duplicate post about this issue. As always, just point me in a direction and I'll do some reading up. I do hope, however, someone is able to assist and/or advise me on the problem I'm experiencing.

About 6 months ago I sold my E87 118i for a nice sexy 2011 E90 330d (LCI). Besides it being a really beautiful and elegant car; and driving like a dream with so much power under the hood, the electrical system is getting me down big time. So this is what happened in the last 6 months:

I would drive her with no incident. I get to work/home, park her, lock her with the remote as one would do. But upon returning to the vehicle, I press the unlock button and off goes the alarm, no hazards flashing, with the remote being completely unresponsive. I would then unlock the vehicle with the mechanical key and insert the remote into the key slot and the alarm would be silenced.

She did this about 4-5 times until one day the entire car stopped responding to anything I did. The alarm would go off, but inserting the remote into the slot did absolutely nothing. She would eventually respond after a few seconds (which increased to minutes later on). Car Track kept phoning to claim that the car has had an electrical power loss. It didn't make sense to me because the battery is still good, and obviously I'm starting her without incident.

A few weeks after that, the car did the exact same thing but this time around, she lost complete electrical power. Doesn't matter what you do, she would be dead. But what I have noticed is that after a while (45+ minutes) of leaving her undisturbed, she would magically regain electrical power again. It might be worth noting that at times (not always) the time and date would be lost.

This prompted us to start diagnosing the problem and essentially we bypassed the power distribution box (the red box on top of the battery). This seemed to have solved the problem for at least 3 weeks. And then she started again with her nonsense.

But by now, the footwell module went corrupt and I had to have it re-programmed. About a week later, the electrical issue started again. I went out to JHB for a meeting and when I was ready to leave, she lost all electrical power again. I opened the fuse box (in the glove compartment) and fiddled with the connections which restored electrical power again.

Last week Wednesday afternoon she did the same thing, but this time she immediately responded to the remote in the key slot. But strange enough, this was the first time she lost all personalisation settings (the ones that are supposed to be saved to the remote) and the climate control settings were also out of whack (not where they were when I parked it the morning). The time and date was 100% however.

The very next day when I arrived home, the same problem occurred but this time only the time was lost.

This now leads me to conclude that there must be a connection problem with one (or more) of the connectors connecting to the fuse box. Some googling has lead me to articles where the same (or similar) problem has been experienced with some US models, and some guys in the UK have also experienced this problem.

In the mean time, I've contacted BMW AG to get some assistance on this issue who referred it to BMW SA. But as usual, they cannot take the blame and they need to first "investigate" to see if it's really a problem. It's been 2 weeks since the last communication with BMW SA.

Obviously, they have time on their hands to sit and "investigate" but I unfortunately don't. This is the only vehicle I have, and work doesn't give a fly about our problems. So somethings gotta give.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced this (or a very similar) problem on their E90's? And if so, how was this fixed? I'm actually too scared to phone a BMW dealership to find out what the cost would be to have it fixed out of my own pocket. But I guess if I have no other choice, then that's what I'll have to do.

Hi Guys,

What is a realistic price I can ask for the below.

I want to sell my Wife's 2013 330d M-Sport, white in color with almost 80 000km's on the clock. (MP still active)

The car is currently in serious need of a valet, but overall in a good nic with nothing to be spent.

This specific model have the 18" instead of the 19's so the ride is not as harsh, cream with wood interior - that might not win over harts BUT I must be honest I like it over all the black interiors, actually I love it and my next order willt be a light color again... (matter of taste and opinion right, everybody's should differ)

Additional extras is not that much tbh, Active Xenon headlights with auto dim and leveling, M-sport and that is about it I think.

BUT, the main point is, the Motorplan is still active until July/Aug 2019 and can be extended for another 1 year. The car has had full service history at 1 BMW dealership and it is going on the 18th for a service.

I can add a pic or 2 later on, but thought I would keep that for the ForSale thread.

Hey Guys

One of my buddies bought herself a 320i full shell with papers for a steal.
The car just does not have a motor or gear box

Now she wants to do ls1 swap in .
The price she is getting the motor for is 65k and that comes with the gear box (man 6 speed) and start ecu.
The shell she has was an auto.

Is this a big conversion to get done and what are the pros and cons.
She wants to be different and not fit a 2jz , as she loves a v8
Car will be used for drifting and just some fun, nothing serious.

E90 thermostat advice needed

My e90 330d (Pre LCI) seems to be running a bit too cool for my liking on the high way, this morning on my way to work using a bluetooth OBDII port adapter and the torque app it showed my coolant temperature ranging in the low 60°C at 120km/h. I'm no expert but i think thats a bit low and suspect its the Thermostat that could be faulty. When idling it sits around 90°C - 98°C and then the fan kicks in, and when driving in town it sits between 70°C - 80°C.

I have changed the Waterpump and EGR Thermostat on Sunday as the waterpump decided it had enough and the EGR Stat just followed, so we can rule those two out Hammerhead

I got pricing from BMW and its R1297 for the thermostat and from GW its R830 for a Behr/Meyle

Now the question is which should I go for?

Yellow Transmission light on morning starts

Morning Guys,

Just had a problem this week since monday, my E90 320d LCI Auto has been throwing the amber transmission warning light on morning/cold starts. Which then results to it not wanting to engage into drive.

Monday I had to switch the car off and on again for the warning to go away.
Tuesday it came on for a second and was off by itself
Wednesday(today) - car warmed up and it went away

It never comes on it the evenings when I leave work, and was wondering could this be gearbox service or dying battery?

335 N55 not starting “clicking” sound

Hi guys, so on Tuesday morning my car started fine, drove somewhere, parked the car, came back to the car after 5min, inserted the key, everything came on as per usual, pressed the start button and I got a “clicking” sound, I tried again, got the same “clicking” sound. Hi Guys!
This is exciting... for me ..

Sooo I have a new project , another car to mess about with for the holidays or for whatever time it takes me to fix it Bluebiggrin

The car in question belongs to a very close friend and after he had seen what I did to my aunts E46 Ti , he begged me to help him with his car ( well his been begging me for help before that but it was in a much better condition then haha) . So anyway after months of begging I have finally conceded to his request .

The car is a 2003 E46 320i Automatic M-Sport Individual . It has a very nice blue color , Estoral blue I think its called . Unfortunately , It is in all sense of the word a complete mess . Im going to have to figure out this car piece by piece as its in terrible condition , inside and out as well as mechanically . Its been sitting parked off for about a year under a car port, and kind of slowly dying . He did start it up occasionally .

Im really hoping you guys could help me out with this one on the mechanical side .

It runs very poorly , stumbles a lot , makes strange noises from the engine bay , the power steering fluid leaks all over the place, Once filled it does work well , but then leaks out everywhere , ( I will try and find the leak) but it does drive , I drove it from his home to my home .

Washed it as it was covered in dust and leaves, thereafter I proceeded to read the Engine Fault codes with INPA .

The fault codes that I managed to pull out state

1) 241 Burning Fail Cylinder 4
2) 239 Burning Fail Cylinder 2
3) 2 Ignition Zyl . 4
4) 29 Ignition Zyl. 1
5) 1 Ignition Zyl. 2
6) 8 Air Flow meter
7) 90 TEG_UP_1
8) 91 TEG_UP_2
9) 93 TEG_DOWN_2
10) 63 Signal CAN environment temperature
11) 52 Exhaust Flap

What do all these codes mean? Where should I even start?

All help would be greatly appreciated! Will post up a few pictures of my progress as soon as I can! Bluebiggrin

High fuel consumption

Hi Guys,

The last couple of weeks I noticed that my fuel consumption has increased alot. I normally average 9.8l/100km and now my average is 11.8lts/100

I leave for the northern cape tomorrow and don't have the luxury of a BMW garage there.

Is there anything I can check that could be causing the high consumption?

Someone recommended I should take out the air filter and blow it out with a compressor until I can get it replaced....good idea?

Hi Guys, I bought my 1st BMW about 2/12 years ago, after my RunX RSi was stolen.
I love the car, but lately its giving me headaches.
The Car:
2007 E90 325i Msport

The problem/s:
Oct 2018 - hit a bad pothole
Christmas tree lights on.
Parked the car and removed the Battery terminal. Fault cleared later that night. Drove the car the next day....XMAS lights again.
Took the car to Bosch Service Center. Cleared faults, test drove, All Good. 2 days later XMAS lights. Back to Bosch. Cleared fault, test drove, XMAS lights back permanently. Bosch can clear faults. Outsourced (not sure to whom) 8K quote to replace ABS unit and harness.

Booked car into Supertech:
Ran diagnostics for about 2 hours? DSC Unit could be coded, needed replacing. Quote of 40K - half the value of the car.

Bought DSC unit and pump from Spares boys, local Mech fitted and coded (3K). for about 1 week no problems.
Again XMAS lights. Local Mech not sure why. Cleared faults, recoded. Test drive - XMAS lights then only Traction control and handbrake (orange) cleared faults. these 2 are not clearing. have to recode Steering sensor.
Drive for short while - Traction control and handbrake (orange). recalibrating Steering sensor clears these lights. But car still showing faults on scan.

Bought INPA cable and downloaded Software. Left with these faults:

Local Mech has no idea

Any advice or referral to an experienced Mech in Durban will be highly appreciated. I need my car fully operational for work. see Pic below...

Start/Stop function issue

I have an F10 with a now troublesome start/stop function. Everytime time the start/stop thing switches off the car, I have to push the gear lever back into drive.

What could be causing this?

It gives a message telling me that it won't drive after engine has stopped & that i must drive moderately to the nearest BM.

Navigation in F30 advice needed

Hi guys

Just a quick one. I recently purchased a 2015 F30 which came with the business navigation. When pressing the navigation button, it asked for a code to start the nav.

Took it to JSN Bmw in Bryanston today for the motorplan transfer and I was advised that the nav expires after 2 years and that I need to pay R1800 for a new code from BMW. Can anyone please shed some light on this for me? Why do I need to re-pay for something that should have come with the car?

19s vs 18s on F30 M Sport suspension

Hi,

I am itching to get 19s to replace my 18s, but my main worry is tyre and rim damage (due to the lower profile) and replacement cost compared to my 18s.

I am not hitting potholes everyday, but the roads near my place are pretty rutted and rough.

I am not too concerned about ride comfort, but more concerned about the increased likelihood of tyre and rim damage and cost.

Any views appreciated.

Hi guys and gals

I have a 2006 e90 330i 160K on the clock.

My vehicle made a terrible noise coming from the engine bay. A tap sound but not the engine.

I took it to a different garage than BMW for a diagnose and they told me i will have to replace the compressor even thought its only the pulley and belt tensioner( what they told me).

To replace the whole pump? Thats not necessary in my eyes. The compressor blows strongly, ice cold and warm air.

I drove the vehicle however today BUT the vehicles belt came of and i lost my power steering as well as i perceive the belt runs over there as well.

1)Can anyone here tell me why would i need to pay R16000 for a new compressor while the mechanical breakdown insurance that i have covers only R6000, why can i not just have the pulley replaced and the compressor fixed in that way. Do i really need to replace the whole unit?

2)Can it happen that when the compressor pulley gives in or breaks that i can loose the power steering as the belt is just hanging there? Im greatful i was in my road when this happened.

3) Can anyone tell me over which units or compartments that belt runs to hep it function and can i drive to a garage or do i have to have it towed somewhere?

4) Any other advice would be appreciated. Anything guys.
