Rough Idle on an E90

Hey guys,

So my dad E90 had a terrible idle on start up and now refuses to turn over at all now, just swings. Before towing the car to a mech I would like to know has anyone experienced such a problem? What could it be?

e90 Boot slams closed

Hi All!
The last couple of years the boot of my 320d e90 has to be closed by slowly lowering it, otherwise it just falls like a dead weight. I thought it was the gas struts and had them replaced today without it making any difference!

Am I missing something? Is there some other adjustment so I don't lose my fingers if I accidentally drop the boot?

Hi Guys!

So as per a previous post , I promised to help my aunt , "Sort out" her car , a 2001 E46 325ti with around 91 450 kms on it .

The car was serviced at a BMW Dealership ( Back when that particular dealership was owned by somone else and had its dark days) wont mention name . And then when off motorplan by another popular Durban BMW shop ( Wont mention name either )

Now my aunt (Whose pretty old) knows nothing about cars what so ever , when the car asked for a service , she sent it in and expected them to do whatever needed to be done and she paid.

She had asked me to sort of refresh her interior and if I could help her fix her switching off issue as she had sent if to someone to have fixed and after replacing a sensor the car was still switching off .

Anyway ,before it went in I had suspected that her issue was the vanos seals , as it was heavy on fuel , not much power in the lower revs etc so I purchased new vanos seals for the car from moranor of which the other guys were supposed to fit but they disagreed with me and instead fitted a new vanos sensor which did nothing to solve the problem .

anyway,

She has asked me to help her sort it out , So I decided to replace the vanos seals myself and look through the car and see if there's anything else that needs attention .

What I found so far
1) The air filter is the ORIGINAL filter fitted to the car in 2001
2) The fuel filter is the ORIGINAL filter fitted to the car in 2001
3) The spark plugs were never changed
4) The Cabin air filter is also the original filter fitted to the car when new
5) There is a slight leak on the radiator expansion bottle (Also still its original part)
6) There is a little sludge in the engine but not that much
7) The pipe going from the valve cover to the CCV? I think its called is cracked .
8) The pipe by the power steering bottle seems to be leaking at the point where the bottle meets the pipe. I dont think the bottle is cracked , I think the pipe end might be loose .
9 ) I dont think the Brake fluid has ever been changed ( might have been while under motorplan but I dont know )

I need advice on this car , what else should I look at ?

Should I change the fuel filter? The spark plugs still look very good . So not sure if I should change that .

How do I get the fan off? I don't have the special fan clutch tool , I found one person in Durban who sells the tool and he wants R800 for it which I think is a bit excessive for a piece if metal with holes in it , is there another way I could get it off?

The guy at BMW told me that I should use a screw driver down on one of the nuts and with the 32mm spanner on the nut , I should give it a wack and the nut should come loose , then turn it by hand or with the spanner .

I will post some pictures of the car before and after of the car later when im all done . It really is a nice little E46... that front end and lexus tail lamps grows on you i guess haha.

Turbo Feed Pipe and tappet cover

Hi All,

I had what looked like old dried oil at the bottom of the manifold, I took it to BMW and asked them to check it out and see what caused it since i had to bring it to them in any case for the door lock.

I got a call from them saying that they can see it was leaking from the top of the manifold/turbo and suspect the O-ring. but they want to replace the turbo feed pipe and install a one-way valve in the feed pipe and a new tappet cover.

I saw the it by chance and haven't had any issues with the car so im concerned that they are replacing parts but are not sure what caused the problem in the first place.

Im also concerned that the one way valve they want to install will cause the turbo to not cool down once the engine is stopped as the valve stops the oil from flowing through the turbo.

what will the tappet cover do ?


Any advise from the forum and some dealers here please

E46 330d- indicators & wipers

Hi guys

I just changed the steering shaft. After putting everything in place i discover the indicators, no lights on instrument cluster, wipers, aircon, windows and sunroof ain't working anymore.

As i drove about 10km sensor warning lights came on on dash and i got no idea whats wrong.

Please help!!!!

Where is the Rear window washer nozzel on E46 325Ti?

Hi Guys!

So im trying to figure out the rear wiper/Washer system of this car and I cant seem to find the nozzle that sprays washer fluid on the back window anywhere .

It does have the washer system , Theirs a bottle in there with a motor and such .

But I cant see a nozzle anywhere , can someone post me a picture or tell me where to look?

Will be extremely grateful !

Fan and thermostat

Hi all

Need some help
At what temperature does the fan come on and the thermostat open on an E90 320i 2009 model.
I am testing it right now and on 101 degrees the fan has not come on as yet.
The thermostat still hasn't opened as the bottom pipe is still cold.

BMW E46 330 Diesel just cranking not starting

Bmw E46 2004 330 diesel just cranking not starting. We have tested the fuel pump is working and there is pressure going to the injectors. We recently did a diagnostic and it picked up all 6 glow plugs were not working. We replaced this and yet it still does not fire up. The glow plug relays are working under the glove compartment. The fuses in the engine bay are fine. The car does start with quick start but only runs with this... once we stop spraying this the car switches off. What can I do to fix this?

Hi guys,

I recently bought a 3.46 diff for my e36. Went to fit this on Monday afternoon and the incompetent mechanic removed 23 of the 24 drive shaft bolts but stripped the last one BAD.

He put all back together saying he would weld another bold to remove but has been a no show since.

I need somebody to do this for me at a reasonable price.. any recommendations?

The General's E92 335i

Hi guys.
So havent posted much, still need to get some decent pics loaded up of the 335i so i can show her off.

Havent done anything with her as ye. but yesterday i had her booked in at JSN to check software update, which they did.
My reasons:
1. Launch Control not working (found a thread online that Kish started about my vehicle at the time and that it not working even back then, so something is up)

2. Was getting an intermittant slight surge at low speeds in the lower gears when cruising at partial throttle.

the Technician took a drive with me, (he drove), tried every combination of the launch control, even phoned friends etc and still it didnt want to work. (Initially JSN told me that the pre-facelift 335i didnt come with LC. then after telling them mine is DCT, they were skeptical, but their technicians confirmed it should have.)
the Guy who drove my car told me it could be software related, especially the surge, as well as him pointing out that when i come to a stop, the rev counter goes to resting position, but then gives a slight blip of 300-400rpm then settles finally.
also said that the car has a slight pulsing when idling.

He said that this is all down to Software, and that i should book it in.

So needless to say, the Software didn't correct the LC. i haven't felt the slight surge, but i only just got the car back. (Jaime was my Service Consultant at JSN, and honestly didnt like his attitude, almost like he was doing me a favour.)
I was told by Carlo that the Reprogramming would be around R900, but when i collected, i was given an invoice of R1600 by Jaime, saying that the R900 estimate was diagnosis only, and not the actual job. i told them im not paying for that, as i was told a rate, and thats what i will pay, to which his immediate response was "Sure no problem".

Anyway, Jaime also said that they wanted to keep the car and run diagnostics and troubleshoot that the car is not boosting as it should (i know its not as i have wastegate rattle, and the wind noise when spooling), i said no its ok, as i know about it, and thats next times issue. as they wants 2k to look at it before doing anything on the motor. they said this is why the cars launch control doesnt work as the car needs to get full boost for LC??
I was given a rough estimate of R39 000 to replace turbos on my car (including the Turbo exchange, he even referenced @osiris car coming in for the Turbo replacement, and said that my rate is an out of Warranty rate so will be 20% more expensive.)

So, needless to say, i wont be doing much else at JSN, or a BMW dealer unless i really have to.
My next priority is Turbos, and getting the Rattle repaired, and making sure the boost is contained and running correctly. as the car feels smooth to me, and well powered, but according to JSN, the car is not boosting right, and that when it is, i will definately feel the difference and "the car will scare me" according to them :D

So heres to hoping.

Hello my fellow Fanatics.

I recently got the following code on my OBD Scanner, P0420.
What i would like to know is would a decat work to rectify this, or is there underlying problems that i am not aware of and will the decat give me any joy in the future.

Car drives very, very hard, when driving on steep hills or inclines, power drops and the Hyundai I10's come flying past. Not use to those kind of thing.

Car is a 2004 318i N46.

Any feedback on this error would be greatly appreciated.

Cooling Fan F30

I'm back so soon.dunno anymore

Had the problem some time back and was advise to change the battery which I did.

The cooling fan comes on high speed, on a cold start. I have to turn the car off the get it to stop. No warning lights. No Faults found. This is my first BMW and I always decided against these cars. There must of been a good reason. Don't know why I changed my mind. Anyway....any ideas good people. bear in mind I still have to replace the oil line turbo pipe at R3000.00.

Your assistance is highly appreciated.

Hi Everyone, i am new to this forum and to BMW driving. Taking delivery of my first BMW on Wednesday. I am wanting to change those horrible yellow halogen lights to something that will make the Midnight Blue colour of my car standout. Rough idle

Morning, I drive a 330d late 2006 model.
I removed the dpf and installed a down pipe. Ever since the car, usually after cold start and even when it's hot, I notice that it idle uneven. When I drive at rpm above idle up to above 2 000 I can feel it searching, the more load the engine takes, the better it is, but less load, you can feel it search and even see it on the rev counter. I have unplugged the airmass meter, same thing, recently removed the swirl flaps, same thing, though now it feels a bit better, but still. If anyone had the same experience or has any ideas, please share it with me.

I have a bmw e46 320d, it currently has a blank bit of plastic on the steering wheel, i am wondering if it would be a straight swap for the MLF, i understand that the cruise control probably won't work but i want the buttons for my stereo thanks

E30 white paint code debate

Hi guys. A buddy and I are debating what whites the E30 325is came in. He says ice white, alpine white and alpine white II? I don’t recall so many white colors? Can that we correct? I thought it was just ice white??

He may be correct. I checked online and there is no evidence of ice white???

First issue with my F30 320i

Hi guys,

As you guys might remember, took delivery of this car about 3 months ago (preowned).

Anyways, was driving quite fast on the N1 a few days ago. Then a warning light flashed : Drive Train. The message advised me to drive at moderate speeds and send the car in to a BMW technician.

Car has virtually no power. So I sent the car to SMG this morning (car is still under plan). They tell me the car has to be stripped. Should have it by tomorrow, end of business day.

What is this problem? Should I be concerned?
