I always have difficulty navigating this forum and if I have missed the thread on this topic, my apologies.
Just wanted opinions on air filters - K&N vs BMC vs Stock.
I have had a K&N filter fitted to my previous car - an e46 however, on small engine NA cars there is a minimal performance difference.
That being said, I have read up that the size of the pores on stock filters are considerably smaller than that in K&N filters hence better filtration. There is also argument in favor of K&N that due to it having a combination of mesh and oil this compensates for the filter's pores being larger to allow for greater intake and an equivalent filtration effect (impurities being caught on the oil). Is this true of K&N / oil based performance filters in general? Or does it really allow for much more impurities to pass through as compared to stock as the allegations go?
Also, K&N filters are considerably more expensive than BMC - which are considered to be better from the two? Seems that it's just preference of brands for most people.
Please share views / opinions / facts on this as I have received mixed responses from mechanics / performance tuners / car enthusiasts.
