My dad's 2001 e46 325i touring's auto box has a serious issue of going into limp (stuck in 4th) after a 50km odd drive, or when driving a tad enthusiastically. Its a ZF A5S 325Z gearbox according to realoem. The error codes are:
-DTC 31 Symptom, gear monitoring
-DTC 38 Symptom GLUE
-DTC 41 Gear monitoring 4 (limp-home mode)
based on some googling we decided to have the gearbox serviced in hopes it would exorcize the demons, but it did unfortunately not.
I've heard rebuilding the box would be something scary like R20k+plus. I'm a bit scared of second hand gearboxes. I've seen imported gearboxes go for about R8000 with guaranteed low kilometers on them. Are these worth getting, or is there anything else that can be done?
